A Christmas Adventure at Lortherton Hall

If you have never been to a stately English home in England during the Christmas season, you need to put this on your bucket list! There are hundreds of stately homes and castles in England, many of which try to finance their upkeep by opening their doors to the public at certain times of the year. Many are open at Christmas and decorate the rooms and surrounding grounds, also offering various Christmas activities such as meeting Santa and/or Mrs. Claus, baking with the elves and festive walks.

Loterton Hall is located east of Leeds and is one such stately home, and the staff really know how to make Christmas happen! Each room of the house was decorated with Christmas ornaments and trees, in

a specific theme and time period. Many of the items have been in the house over the generations. Under the trees and placed around the rooms were time-period toys and gifts as well as musical instruments, toiletries, and other household items. The house was breath-taking. There were activities at this house which included baking with Mrs. Claus and visiting Santa, and a class of students had just

finished baking and decorating their gingerbread cookies. We chose to take the festive walk around the property and there were lights, music and decorations along the way. We stopped stopped at a large tent and had mulled wine, and enjoyed music and Christmas carols. It was a wonderful way to view a stately home and to get into the spirit of Christmas!
